Update on Our Recycling Efforts

By Amanda Murphy

We wanted to give the status on our plastic pot recycling efforts...Currently, we are in the process of scheduling our first pick up from East Jordon Plastics. We have 14 pallets of plastic pots wrapped and ready for recycling!

This is literally a ton of plastic that we are diverting from the landfill and instead will be recycled into new containers. That’s 2,000 lbs of plastic plant pots—and also a clear picture of how much planting we all have been doing since May!

Ultimately, it would be great to be completely not reliant on plastic containers for plants, but for the time being this is the preferred container by our growers. Other materials are being experimented with, but currently, plastic can just better handle the growing, shipping and shelf life needed for the landscape industry.

We are doing our part to close the loop on recycling these containers and look forward to working with other landscape companies and our growers to keep this plastic out of landfills.

If you’re interested in recycling plastic pots you may have purchased from a garden center, there are drop off sites at most Home Depot locations. Or, feel free to contact Amanda if M.J. can help. We all need to work together to make a difference!
