Sustainability at M.J. Design: Our Commitment to Recycling and Composting

Updated: Jan 29

At M.J. Design, we’re passionate about recycling and sustainability. We take pride in ensuring that every step we take minimizes our environmental footprint. Our commitment to the planet is evident in the way we recycle materials like pots, metal parts, cardboard, Styrofoam, plastic, wood, and anything organic—everything gets a second life through responsible recycling and composting.

At home, Molly and I (Joel) take this commitment even further. We’ve partnered with The Compost Exchange, a local organization that helps divert food scraps from landfills. Did you know that over 33% of all food in the United States ends up in the trash? That’s not just wasteful—it’s harmful. When food decomposes in a landfill, it releases harmful gases and doesn’t break down as it would in a natural environment. However, when composted properly, food scraps can be transformed into nutrient-rich soil that benefits gardens and plants, helping to close the loop on waste.

This is where The Compost Exchange comes in. With their convenient drop-off locations and curbside pickup at your house, they make it easy for us to contribute to the circular economy and reduce waste in our community. By using their service, we’re helping to ensure that our food scraps serve a greater purpose rather than polluting the environment.

Together, whether at M.J. Design or in our own homes, we believe in doing our part to build a more sustainable future. Recycling and composting are just two of the ways we’re working to make a positive impact, and we hope to inspire others to take small steps toward sustainability as well.

Let’s all do our part to reduce waste and support a cleaner, greener planet!

About the Compost Exchange

Since its founding in 2012, The Compost Exchange has been dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of organic waste by converting food scraps into nutrient-rich compost. Initially established as an Ohio EPA-certified Class II composting facility in Athens, Ohio, the organization has since evolved, adapting to meet the needs of the growing Columbus community.

In 2015, after selling its Athens facility, The Compost Exchange shifted its focus to food scrap recycling services for residents and businesses in the Columbus area. By offering drop-off locations throughout the city, the organization made it easier than ever for individuals to divert organic waste from landfills and help create a more sustainable future.

Building on this success, 2018 saw the introduction of Central Ohio’s first widely available curbside food scrap collection service. This direct-to-consumer initiative allows customers to conveniently leave their food scraps on front porches and sidewalks for pick-up, making composting an easy and accessible option for everyone.

Today, The Compost Exchange proudly serves nearly all of Columbus and its surrounding areas, providing both drop-off and curbside services to thousands of customers. The organization continues to grow, promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship while turning organic waste into valuable compost that nourishes local soil.

By choosing to recycle food scraps with The Compost Exchange, customers are playing a key role in reducing landfill waste, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to a greener, more sustainable community.
